“SONG OF A SOUTHERN MAN”

THE STORY

Most young musicians today have grown up assimilating a variety of musical influences, but it’s the way they take those seminal sounds and blaze their own unique creative path that determines their future. With one listen to Jet Black Roses, it’s obvious that band members Tyler Cates and brothers Trey and Andrew Bentley are fusing their roots to create an intoxicating new sound on their debut album, Song of a Southern Man.

Often described as rock and roll with a country soul, Jet Black Roses combines the intensity of such rock legends as Tom Petty and Aerosmith with the storytelling sensibilities of country stalwarts like George Strait and Alan Jackson. “We want people to feel our music is familiar but also something new that they can use as the soundtrack for their lives,” Cates says.

“I want hearts to be mended, babies to be made and lives to be changed,” Trey Bentley interjects with a smile. “I want people to walk away and be like, ‘Damn! That song helped me move on or brought me back after I lost someone I loved.’ That’s what I like to hear. I like to hear, ‘Man, this music, these lyrics hit me in a different way.’ I want them to feel a little bit of that redemption.”

THE BAND

TREY BENTLEY

Born and raised in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains in a county called Red Bud, GA. Trey was immersed in songwriting and music from an early age growing up with musical parents. The first time Trey listened to “Late for the Sky” by Jackson Browne, he was bitten by the songwriters bug, and spent most of his Middle School and High-school years honing in on his craft. He spent four years out of high school writing for EMI Publishing, which he credits to helping him become the songwriter he is today. Trey is the blood brother to Andrew Bentley (Jet Black Roses Bassist and Vocalist), and he is the lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist for Jet Black Roses.

ANDREW BENTLEY

Andrew Bentley grew up with older brother, Trey, singing harmonies and writing music in Red Bud, GA. He started playing bass at age 8 and fell in love with playing along to zeppelin and flying burrito bros. records. Moonshine & music run through his blood and the winds of the North GA mountains still carry him today as the bassist and harmony vocalist for Jet Black Roses.

TYLER CATES

Tyler was born and raised in North Carolina, where he found an early love of music in his Dad’s vinyl collection, and after getting a guitar for Christmas when he was 11, it was all over. After studying guitar, composition, and recording at Western Carolina University, he moved to Atlanta to pursue his passion. He has amassed a considerable catalog as a producer and session guitarist, with credits that include Rick Ross, Jeezy, Big Boi, Ludacris, and many more. He also honed his performance chops in venues throughout the country. After meeting Trey and Andrew through various serendipitous circumstances, he knew destiny was calling in the form of Jet Black Roses. He plays lead guitar and sings in the band.
